2009-10 GBF Clinics and Events Updated 8/10/2010; new clinics, events, dates, and changes in red Click here to see 2005-9 Archive Upcoming classes and clinics Art Livingston is taking over the reins for scheduling GBF's education programs. Bill Carnazzo has done a terrific job this past year and we're confident Art will keep the ball rolling for 2010, so be sure to check back here for new classes and clinics as the schedule evolves. Art has already scheduled Intermediate/Advanced Fly Tying starting Feb. 24 for six consecutive weeks with guest experts. Bill Egan will teach Beginning Fly Tying in two sessions Jan. 30 and Feb. 6. Art Hawkins and Michael Kaul are again offering the popular Net Building workshops in multiple sessions through this Spring. Larry Lee is doing the same for Rod Building. Art and Tom Ross will then offer Map Reading and GPS Navigation at a date to be announced. Sturmer White will lead three casting clinics on mid-week dates in February and March for intermediate to advanced flycasting at the Folsom Lake boat ramps in Granite Bay. Members should always feel free to suggest classes and clinics that would be of benefit to the membership. It can be anything — simple and basic, or advanced and more complex. We like to do a good mix, but give preference to basic classes and clinics in order to help newer members advance their skills. And, remember—classes and clinics are great, but one of the fastest ways to flatten the learning curve is to attend fishouts. Karl Wolff, our Fishmaster, has set up an outstanding line-up of venues. Here’s where you can find assistance in casting, angling strategy and techniques, and stream/lake lore. So sign up — early and often. Art Livingston GBF Education
GBF classes and clinics are for Club members only (if you haven't joined GBF yet, be sure to contact us so we can get you signed up. Right Click here and select "Save As" to download & print a membership application PDF document.)
Including our monthly fly tying jams, GBF sponsors 40 - 50 educational sessions annually (see below). These included clinics on land, in the water, and at workshops for casting, fly tying, various skills, building equipment, and studying aquatic entomology. This is a great way for you to learn the skills of fly-fishing from beginner to advanced!
How to sign up for a clinic: Once an article appears in The Leader and on the Website, it will inform you when and where you can sign up for a clinic. Usually, a sign-up sheet will be offered at a Club meeting. Most clinics allow a limited number of participants. This is to ensure that participants have a quality experience and the event is not over crowded. Instructors must decide how many students they can handle. We do not allow pre-sign ups for limited clinics. Please, do not call the Clinic Leader and ask to be placed on a sign up list for a limited clinic prior to the sign-up sheet being offered at a Club meeting. After a sign-up sheet has been offered and if there are still openings, you may contact the Instructor and ask to be placed on the list. You may also ask to be placed on a waiting list in case an opening becomes available.
A small fee is required for some clinics. Your payment is expected at the time you enroll. Without a payment, your slot is not guaranteed if the clinic fills. The payment must be made out to Granite Bay Flycasters and given to the Instructor (checks are preferred). The Instructor will forward all fees to the Club Treasurer after the Clinic is held. Your fee is refundable provided you cancel with enough notice that the Instructor has time to fill your slot with someone on the waiting list.
For unlimited member clinics, you may sign up at anytime by contacting the Clinic Leader after notice has been posted in The Leader and Website. You may access a complete copy of GBF's Fishout and Clinic Guidelines using this link. Clinic details will be published in The Leader and at this Web page links at the beginning of the month of the clinic. Club Clinics are limited to participation by active club members only...if you haven't joined GBF yet, be sure to contact us (here) for an application so we can get you enrolled! LOANER RODS & TYING TOOLS
GBF allows active members in good standing to check out equipment under the following conditions.
To check out a rod and reel combination, see Bill Carnazzo or Pete Peterson. Pete will have two 5 wt. and two 8 wt. units at all club meetings. To check out a fly tying kit, call Paul Egan.
The 5 wt. rods have a floating line on them. The 8 wt. have a floating line and we do have some extra spools with a sinking tip. We are also working on obtaining some 8 wt. full sinking lines. |
