2008 GBF Clinics and Events Updated 4/6/2008; new clinics, events, dates, and changes in red Scroll down to see 2005-7 clinics & page links
Time to begin planning fishouts and other events for the rest of 2008: It's time to plan our outings, classes, and clinics schedule for the second half of 2008. We've had a great time with our outings during the last year (July, '07 to present), but we need to keep up the momentum. We've already had offers from Chuck Honeycutt to lead a Heenan Lake fishout later this summer; Ron Hayashi and Sturmer White to do an advanced knot clinic; Ron Hayashi and John Peterson to do an introductory spey clinic; and Jim Holmes and Gene Goss to do a class on stillwater fishing. We need input from members on suggested outings for this upcoming period, as well as volunteers willing to lead the outings. The response for the last year has been terrific. We also want suggestions for classes and clinics, which are an important part of our education mission. We are, first and foremost, a fishing club--so we need to do outings, and we need to pass along our skills to members wanting to improve theirs. Here's what we'd like: 1. Suggestions as to fishout venues. 2. Volunteers to lead outings. 3. Suggestions as to classes and clinics that would be helpful, in addition to those mentioned above. You can send your suggestions to Bill Carnazzo, whose contact information is set out below. From there the outing committee, consisting of Bill, Denny, and Mike Susslin, will take over and come up with specifics and a schedule. Thanks! 2008 Fly Tying Classes Planned
Granite Bay Flycasters is offering both beginning and intermediate/advanced fly tying classes during Spring, 2008. Admittedly this announcement is premature. However, it’s important to plan your schedule because the classes will use a multi-session format. We can’t take signups until early spring, but between now and then members can think about and plan for these classes, and ask questions as necessary. Both classes will be limited in terms of the number of members who can attend. Past experience has shown that limited attendance classes are far more productive.
The beginning class will be taught by Paul Egan. Paul will be conducting the class on two Saturdays, March 1 & 15. Paul is a creative and excellent fly tyer and instructor. He has taught beginning classes in the past for the club.
The intermediate/advanced class will be conducted by Bill Carnazzo on six successive Tuesdays commencing April 1, 2008. The class will commence at 6:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m., and will be held at the Raley’s Event Center located in Raley’s store at Douglas and Auburn/Folsom Road. There will be a different expert tyer at each session, demonstrating different types of flies and techniques. This format has worked very well in recent years. Here is the schedule:
April 1 Jim Holmes and Gene Goss (Stillwater flies) April 8 Sturmer White (Tying hair bugs) April 15 Bill Carnazzo (October Caddis Quintet) April 29 Ken Hanley (TBA) May 13 Pete Peterson (Pete’s famous bass flies) May 20 David Lee (Dave’s originals)
If fly tying is one of your interests, be sure to consider these classes. There may be a small fee required to fund the cost of materials or other items given to participating members. GBF classes and clinics are for Club members only (if you haven't joined GBF yet, be sure to contact us so we can get you signed up. Right Click here and select "Save As" to download & print a membership application PDF document.)
Including our monthly fly tying jams, GBF sponsored 40 - 50 educational sessions annually in 2005 & 2006 (see below). These included clinics on land, in the water, and at workshops for casting, fly tying, various skills, building equipment, and studying aquatic entomology. This is a great way for you to learn the skills of fly-fishing from beginner to advanced!
How to sign up for a clinic: Once an article appears in The Leader and on the Website, it will inform you when and where you can sign up for a clinic. Usually, a sign-up sheet will be offered at a Club meeting. Most clinics allow a limited number of participants. This is to ensure that participants have a quality experience and the event is not over crowded. Instructors must decide how many students they can handle. We do not allow pre-sign ups for limited clinics. Please, do not call the Clinic Leader and ask to be placed on a sign up list for a limited clinic prior to the sign-up sheet being offered at a Club meeting. After a sign-up sheet has been offered and if there are still openings, you may contact the Instructor and ask to be placed on the list. You may also ask to be placed on a waiting list in case an opening becomes available.
A small fee is required for clinics. Your payment is expected at the time you enroll. Without a payment, your slot is not guaranteed if the clinic fills. The payment must be made out to Granite Bay Flycasters and given to the Instructor (checks are preferred). The Instructor will forward all fees to the Club Treasurer after the Clinic is held. Your fee is refundable provided you cancel with enough notice that the Instructor has time to fill your slot with someone on the waiting list.
For unlimited member clinics, you may sign up at anytime by contacting the Clinic Leader after notice has been posted in The Leader and Website. You may access a complete copy of GBF's Fishout and Clinic Guidelines using this link. Clinic details will be published in The Leader and at this Web page links at the beginning of the month of the clinic. Club Clinics are limited to participation by active club members only...if you haven't joined GBF yet, be sure to contact us (here) for an application so we can get you enrolled!

LOANER RODS & TYING TOOLS
GBF allows active members in good standing to check out equipment under the following conditions.
To check out a rod and reel combination, see Bill Carnazzo or Pete Peterson. Pete will have two 5 wt. and two 8 wt. units at all club meetings. To check out a fly tying kit, call Paul Egan.
The 5 wt. rods have a floating line on them. The 8 wt. have a floating line and we do have some extra spools with a sinking tip. We are also working on obtaining some 8 wt. full sinking lines. |
