Here are some great suggestions about how to fulfill your voluntary, annual four-hour conservation commitment this year. Simply participate in any one (or more) of the following three activities (click the underlined links for more info):
#1. This year Creek Week will be from April 22 to April 29. Work will include trash pick up and other maintenance along Secret Ravine in Roseville. Our date for the clean up is Saturday April 29th. Additional information and signup sheets will be available at our April 13th meeting. There is no limit to the number of volunteers that can participate, and family members are also encouraged to sign up and participate. GBF club member David Baker is leading this outing and we are cooperating with the Dry Creek Conservancy where David is the local field monitor. The Dry Creek web site is www.drycreekconservancy.org and you can reach David at 916-315-0715 or email him at: bakerdavidw@lycos.com
#2 A “special” Creek Week Clean Up, BBQ and Fishout is set for Sunday, April 30, 2006 at 9:00 A.M. when we will meet at the "Plan B" backup site at Sugar Pine Reservoir due to road closure leading to the original site at the Middle Fork of the American River bridge at Oxbow Reservoir. Because the fishing season opens on April 29 on this stream, after the cleanup and BBQ we’ll break out our fly rods and participate in a stream survey. I know: work, work, work! But remember, this is a very productive Rainbow and Brown Trout fishery, so come out and work for a few hours and then “relax” by doing some boulder hopping. Bill Templin, a GBF club member and the American River Watershed Coordinator, will lead this expedition. Be sure to sign up with him and confirm the location and directions before Sunday. For more information and sign up, call Bill at 916-601-9954 or email him at wtemplin@surewest.net
#3. Write a letter to Senator Feinstein encouraging her NOT to alter the existing Endangered Species Act (ESA). Your letter does not need to be longer than one sentence. What counts is that you cared enough to sit down and write. One letter = four hours credit. If you need the address (Google for it?) ask – Heath Wakelee 916-870-5253 or GBFConservation@cs.com. (or see the links from the Civics 101 section at the bottom of GBF's Conservation Legislative Action webpage.
