The election results in November will result in some additional funds to help protect the environment and hopefully some politicians will realize how concerned most of us are about preserving both open space and our recreation opportunities. Most conservationists agree that the failure of Proposition 90 was a good thing. If passed it would have tied up the courts for years with litigation over very nebulous land values. Proposition 90 was OK at the beginning of it’s existence, but ended up being compromised to the point that it should not have survived – and it did not. Good thing. End of editorial.
If you would like to learn more about the Endangered Species Act there is a good guide put out by Earthjustice and the Endangered Species Coalition. The small Citizens’ Guide is only 50 pages long and it is well written. If you would like a copy contact Earthjustice at 800 584 6460 or on the web at www.earthjustice.org and for the Endangered Species Coalition call 202 408 7707 or check their web site at www.stopextinction.org.
It may be premature to thank people for helping out with the salmon count this year – I hope not – but thanks to everyone that came out this year to help with all of the projects coordinated by the Dry Creek Conservancy. They are the local organization that is part of the stream clean up during “Creek Week,” they helped restore some of Secret Ravine this year and do the Salmon Count that has hopefully just taken place. If you have not gone on their web page before – check it out. They are at www.drycreekconservancy.org and worth bookmarking on your computer.
Finally, many of us spend time alone or with others far away from medical help. I urge everyone to take a 16-hour wilderness first aid course and to keep their CPR skills current. Chances are we won’t need these skills but if an opportunity (crisis) presents itself and we are not prepared, then we may do more harm than good. If you’ve read this far and would like some class recommendations, give me a call. Please, give me a call.
