Please mark Sunday, April 22nd on your calendar as a day to get out into the field and help clean up a local stream. This year, Creek Week will run from April 21 to April 28 for Roseville and Rocklin and our local streams really need your help. One good aspect of this event is that the whole family is encouraged to participate. Sure, some of us will don our waders and may get wet, but others will walk the stream banks to collect trash and put things back in order. Because many of us have conflicts with any events held on a Sunday, I would have preferred it if the event could have been held almost any other day. However, our day is part of a larger picture, so we need to view this as our opportunity. Additional information about Creek Week will be posted in March on the Dry Creek Conservancy web site (www.drycreekconservancy.org).
The week after Creek Week we are going to participate in another clean up that will include a BBQ and fishing! It looks like the Ralston After-bay area will be the target, so look for more details about this as the date gets closer. It will likely take place on Sunday, April 29.
Nothing prevents any of us from always carrying a trash bag with us while we are out in the field. We should be picking up the carelessly discarded fishing line, those pitched in the bushes Styrofoam worm containers, and all the tossed Power Bait jars. What I usually do is mentally mark the location of trash on my way in to a location and then pick up what I can on the way out. It does not take up much time and it sure can make a positive difference the next time you visit that area.
We are working on some other club projects and hope to have one or more available soon. Working with the American River Watershed Group (www.arwg.net) and with permission from the various agencies, we hope to get out before the snow melts and clean out some culverts. More about that later when the details have firmed up.
