So, our February conservation committee meeting had 4 in attendance. Thanks to Tony Fabian, Mike Howes and John Carroz for their time. Much was discussed, and although I try to bring extra copies of the agenda to the general meeting, I was unable to attend the meeting in February.
I’ve decided on new criteria for awarding the Jim Coleman Conservation Award at our annual dinner this year. Although I sincerely appreciated receiving the award last year, I’ve created a “log” of those who volunteered their time for GBF’s conservation efforts in 2009. The award will go to the member with the most hours volunteered for the year. Hopefully my successor will continue this tradition, and I hope this will encourage more members to volunteer their time for GBF conservation efforts throughout the year.
Speaking of my successor, have you thought about doing more for the conservation of our local fisheries? My term will end June 30th of this year. It doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to do what I do, and there are plenty of people around with all the guidance you will need for success. Your club needs YOU! Nominations are due by April so they may be printed in the May newsletter. For more information on what this position entails, please find me at the general meeting, or call/e-mail me.
SPECIAL PROJECTS/MEETINGS
January 21st – Lower Yuba River Technical Working Group Meeting Tony Fabian and I attended this meeting at the Yuba County Water Agency. We learned that this project is much bigger than just the conservation easement below the Hwy 20 Bridge. This meeting was concerning another part of the project regarding a gravel augmentation plan just below Englebright Dam. I will continue to attend these meetings on behalf of GBF.
February 2nd – Middle Fork American FERC relicensing meeting Thank you to Bill Carnazzo, Bill Templin and Tony Fabian for attending this meeting on our behalf. Tony has agreed to continue attending these meetings on behalf of GBF.
CABY Western Placer Creeks Work Group meeting I have been unable to attend these meetings. They are currently working on obtaining funding for restoration work to be done on Auburn Ravine / Coon Creek to improve fish passage and habitat. Would someone be interested in volunteering to attend on GBF’s behalf? Please see me at the general meeting, or call/e-mail me.
March 6th – Red Sesbania Removal - Keep an eye on the message board for updates on this event. I will make a recon visit, just before this issue comes out, to see if we need to be out there or not.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held back at Round Table Pizza in Fair Oaks (4400 San Juan Avenue). I hope to have a representative from Putah Creek Trout to speak with us about possible riparian habitat rehabilitation we may be able to assist them with. I’m also hoping we can discuss possible dates for a hardhead fishout, to assist UC Davis in collecting specimen for the hardhead temperature study they will be conducting this year. This will be dependent upon whether they’ve received all their permits by that time.
As always, all are welcome to attend. ~
