Announcement:  Heath Wakelee, VP Conservation will be "off the air" (no emails, in other words) for the month of May following his open heart surgery on Wednesday, April 26th.  Please keep him in your prayers and join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.  Heath is planning to return to the backpacking trails with us in August, and will be back "on the air" and here in June.  During the month of May, 2006, you can contact Mike Laing for conservation related questions.  Mike will be leading the Conservation meeting on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at Mountain Mike's Pizza.  Please attend for this important budgeting meeting.

Announcement: Beginning Tuesday, March 7, 2006, the Conservation Committee meeting location is changed to: Mountain Mike's Pizza (across from Safeway facing Sierra College Blvd.), 4060 Douglas Blvd, #101 Granite Bay, CA 95746  Tel: (916) 773-5656.

A big “THANK YOU” to all the members who turned out for one or more of the Creek Week activities!

On Saturday, April 22nd a small group went out to help put up five permanent signs around Secret Ravine to inform Off-Highway Motor Vehicle (OHMV) users – dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), four-wheel drive vehicles – that the area is not an appropriate or legal place to ride.  The area of concern runs along Secret Ravine on the south side of Interstate 80, just west of where Highway 65 begins and continues south to Sculpture Park.  The City of Roseville owns the area, called Stoneridge Preserve, where only passive (non-motorized) recreation is allowed.  The signs will help inform potential users about appropriate use.  In addition, the Dry Creek Conservancy is working with the City of Roseville and the State of California OHMV Division to provide maps showing where appropriate local riding opportunities exist.

On Saturday, April 29 and 30 some hardy souls went back to Stoneridge Ravine and into the American River Watershed at Sugar Pine Reservoir to do the more traditional stream trash clean up work as part of Creek Week.  Dave Baker led the Secret Ravine outing and Bill Templin led the club on the American River Watershed outing.  Bill’s trip-included a BBQ lunch and also a little fishing afterwards, two great incentives to get out and help clean up a stream, share some food and then do some fishing.  Thank you to the Dry Creek Conservancy, club member Dave Baker and club member Bill Templin from the American River Watershed Group for your outstanding leadership efforts.

Please put our end-of-September weekend outing, being coordinated by John Carroz, to Sagehen Creek (Truckee area) on your calendars (tentative dates are September 15-17).  Why?  Because there will be an entomology workshop (classroom and in-stream) to learn more about the invertebrates that trout feed upon, education about how watersheds impact stream health, fishing time, good food and very likely a few fish stories will also be told.

Thank you again to all the Granite Bay Flycasters members for giving back to help protect our natural resources for both our benefit and for the enjoyment of future generations.
