May 2008 Conservation Report
Well, summer is near and the heat is here! The conservation committee met on May 8th and finalized the 2007-08 donation schedule. This year we were given an extra allowance and dispersed a total of $20,000. $10,000.00 of this, as I’ve previously reported, is being given to the Placer County Legacy Project and will be used for the Auburn Ravine Fish Passage installations. An enlarged copy of the check will be presented to the Placer County Board of Supervisors at their next meeting on Tuesday, May 27th. We are very excited about this and look forward to seeing this project move forward and hopefully GBF will get to do some hands-on work, too.
Another new project has come up as well. The Sac-Sierra Chapter of Trout Unlimited is participating in an Embrace-A-Stream project focusing on the improvement of a specific section of the Upper Mokelumne River. We are donating a total of $600.00 for help with this project, in addition to getting involved with the installation process of the woody debris (fourteen large wood habitat structures and 20 root wad structures) within the Electra Road section of the river. This installation is planned for late summer / early fall 2008, and we will need volunteers for the job. Details of this project will be posted on the conservation page of the GBF website.
The committee also agreed to commit to a small additional donation to South Yuba River Citizens League specifically for their 3rd Annual Spring Run Chinook Salmon Symposium. This will be in addition to our annual budgeted donation to SYRCL. For more information on this event, visit www.yubariver.org or www.calsalmon.org. This event will be July 10-12th this summer in Nevada City, CA.
We are creating a list of volunteers that could be available for DFG wild trout surveys to be done on our local waters. If anyone who hasn’t signed up yet is still interested, please contact Mike Laing at mwlaing@aol.com. DFG also wants to know which waters we would be interested in the most.
David Baker reported that for Creek Week this year GBF members Frank Stolten, Mike Howes, Joe Aichroth, Bill Hagopian and Rick Radoff volunteered to man a GBF display at the Roseville Earth Day celebration on April 19th held at Roseville's new Utility Exploration Center. The booth featured GBF's Classroom Aquarium Education Program and fly-tying demonstrations. GBF members, along with American Civil Construction personnel, Roseville City employees and a couple of walk-on volunteers also removed water hyacinth on Linda Creek in Granite Bay on April 27th. Our members included Candida and David Lee, Eric Palmer, John Carroz and David Baker. They say it was a hard and dirty job, but the rewards were getting to know our fellow club members better, seeing several mother ducks and their ducklings, and restoring a local creek.
Well, that’s all for now folks. Stay tuned next month for more from your conservation committee! Our next meeting will be held at the Raley’s in Granite Bay at the corner of Douglas Blvd and Auburn-Folsom Road at 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 12th in the conference room in the back! ~ Robin Egan, Tggr514@yahoo.com.
P.S. I will post the full details of our donation schedule on the website for members’ review. |
