Our August meeting had 9 attendees!  I’m so excited!  Our main topic of discussion was GBF’s adoption of the Rio Americano Islands and Peninsula through ARPF.

 

SPECIAL PROJECTS

 

August 29th – Red Sesbania Removal (map)

As most of you are aware by now, we have adopted the Rio Americano Islands and Peninsula of the American River through American River Parkway Foundation’s Invasive Plant Patrol program.  The objective is to remove Red Sesbania from the area and keep it out.  Our first major sweep will be on August 29th and then on the 1st Saturday of every month, beginning in October.  There will be sign-up sheets at the general meeting.  Please sign-up!  Lunch and water will be provided.

 

September 19th – Great Yuba River cleanup

We will assist South Yuba River Citizen’s League with their annual Great Yuba River clean-up A separate article is in this month’s leader. 

 

October 3rd Red Sesbania Removal - See August 29th.

 

October 18th Truckee River Day - In conjunction with Sac-Sierra Trout Unlimited, we will assist the Truckee River Watershed Council with the 14th Annual Truckee River Day on Sunday, October 18th.  I will have a sign-up sheet for this event at the general meeting.  This will entail various one-day projects on the Truckee River and a celebration afterwards with food and drinks, booths, and fun activities. There will also be a fish release at 4:00 PM. Children can bring a clean bucket to help release trout into the river.

 

November 7th – Red Sesbania Removal See August 29th

 

November 21st – Culvert Repair Pagge Creek area Tentatively, we will repair a broken culvert on this creek.  Planning for this will take place at the Sept/Oct/Nov conservation committee meetings.  We are going to need tools and machinery for this one.  Please plan to attend, if you can provide these resources.

 

December 5th – Red Sesbania Removal See August 29th

 

December 2009 – Annual Salmon Count This will be in conjunction with Dry Creek Conservancy.  More details to come.

LEGISLATION STATUS

 

AB1052 – Bay/Delta Stamp Extension - To be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee on August 17th.
This bill would make the stamp or validation requirement inoperative as of January 1, 2012. The bill would require 
the department to implement various provisions related to expenditures from the account. The bill would require 
the department, in consultation with the advisory committee, to develop a grant program, as prescribed. The department
would be required to post on its Internet website projects undertaken with funds from the account.

 

SB670 – Suction/Dredge Mining Bill - APPROVED by the Governor on 8/05/09
·  The bill would prohibit the use of any vacuum or suction dredge equipment in any river, stream, or lake, for in stream 
mining purposes, until the director of the department certifies to the Secretary of State that:
 (1) the department has completed the environmental review of its existing vacuum or suction dredge equipment 
regulations as ordered by the court,
 (2) the department has transmitted for filing with the Secretary of State a certified copy of new regulations, as 
necessary, and
 (3) the new regulations are operative.
 
AB 39 (Huffman) — Delta Plan - To be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee on August 17th
This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation to establish a Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Plan.

 

AB 49 (Feuer-Huffman) — Water Efficiency - To be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee on August 17th
This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation to establish a 20% water efficiency requirement for 
the year 2020 for agricultural and urban water users.
 
SB 12 (Simitian) — Delta Stewardship Council - To be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee on August 17th
This bill would declare legislative intent to enact legislation to establish the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Stewardship Council
 
SB 229 (Pavley) — Delta Interim Actions, Water Rights, Groundwater - To be heard by the Senate Appropriations 
Committee on August 17th
This bill would declare legislative intent to enact legislation to authorize actions to be undertaken prior to the adoption of a
comprehensive Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Plan. 

 

SB 458 (Wolk) — Delta Conservancy, Delta Protection Commission Revision - To be heard by the Senate 
Appropriations Committee on August 17th 
This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation to establish a Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta 
Conservancy and to modify the Delta Protection Commission.  
 

The next conservation committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 1st at 7:00 PM at the Round Table Pizza

in FAIR OAKS (San Juan & Winding Way).  As always, all are welcome to attend.
