Plan A: Middle Fork of the American and Rubicon Rivers Plan B: Sugar Pine Reservoir Cleanup, BBQ & Fishout Sunday, April 30, 2006 9:00 AM to whenever |

UPDATE: from
Bill Templin. Plan "B" is in effect....
April 27, 2006 Hi Everyone, what a beautiful day again...
"Plan B"
is now in effect.
Our outing this Sunday will be held at
Sugar Pine Reservoir near Iowa Hill, since the
Mosquito Ridge Road is still closed and we can't get to
Ralston Reservoir, which was "Plan A"
Yesterday, Matt Triggs (USFS,
Foresthill) took me on a tour of area and we visited 3
sites: the Boat Launch, the OHV staging area, and the
Shooting Range/OHV area.
We will meet at 9 a.m. at the
parking lot near the restroom at the Boat Launch.
Introductions and Safety Talks will be followed by breaking
out into groups.
The Boat Launch and OHV staging
areas are normal litter and debris left behind by
recreational users. The "Shooting Range/OHV area" on the
other hand, is in need of "Industrial Strength" help. The
users of this area have hauled in a variety of materials to
use as targets and have left behind everything from propane
tanks to old washing machines along with the beer cans and
Winchester
shotgun shell boxes, and
casings. They haven't punctured the propane tank yet, but
that could be interesting if they do. This appears to be a
tragedy just waiting to happen, so hopefully we can help the
USFS remove some of the "attractive nuisances" and potential
hazards.
We also surveyed part of the
trail that goes all around the lake. We had a report that
part of the trail was slumping into the lake between the
Boat Launch and the Dam. We found this to be true and this
may provide trail restoration project if someone needs a
good community service project. I also observed a nice bench
that was constructed in 2002 as part of a Foresthill Boy
Scout Eagle Project that is in need of repair. Apparently
someone thought that might be a good place to put their
BBQ... unfortunately, that didn't do the wooden bench much
good, so now one end of the bench is burnt.
Following the Clean Up we will
enjoy a BBQ sponsored by the Placer County Resource
Conservation District and then we will have the remainder of
the day to devote to relaxing and seeing if the fish are as
cooperative this weekend as they were last Sunday when a
group of us ventured up there to "monitor" the aquatic
vertebrate assemblages! We may even have some Creek Week Tee
shirts for those who participate in the Clean Up, providing
they still have some after their Saturday events and we can
figure out how to get them up to our event on Sunday.
Thanks to all of our present and
future sponsors for helping us get this first Creek Week
Activity going up in the North Fork American River
Watershed: they now include: Auburn Flycasters, Granite Bay
Flycasters, Dry Creek Conservancy, North Area Sportsmen's
Association, Placer County RCD, and the U.S. Forest Service.
I hope I didn't forget anyone, but if I did, or if you would
like to be added to the list, please let me know.
Attached please find our minutes
from our March meeting. Thanks go out to Rich Gresham for
taking notes for us.
Thanks! I hope we have a
very good turnout at this event. It should be fun and
beneficial to the watershed!
