UPDATE August 8, 2005 Here is the official protocol for cleansing angling equipment. This document was just proofed and approved by David Bergendorf of U.S. Fish and Wildlife. Dave was the biologist who wrote the Cal Fed Grant that paid CDF&G to do the study. Dave Ford and NCC/FFF have approved the document for release, as has our own Ken Davis along with CDF&G. UPDATE December 31st, 2003 On December 26, Gary Flanagan visited Putah Creek with a new flyer. This flyer informed fisherman that Putah Creek is now closed. Hopefully, the work within California Fish and Game and other agencies will find a solution to the New Zealand Mud Snail issue with California. At the time of this update, the NZMS has been discovered in Mokelumne River. This is truly bad news for California game fishers. Some pictures of the initial stakeholders meeting at Putah Creek. |

UPDATE December 7th, 2003
Local fly fishing clubs, the NCFFF, CalTrout, and Trout Unlimited are asking us to mail letters to the Gov's office. This letter [link to letter removed as they are not needed] was composed by Dave Ford, a rep for NCFFF and CFFU, and was slightly revised by Hal Cribbs, our government consultant. Thanks, Dave, for all the hard work! NCFFF will be sending this announcement via their contact system. A large number of letters is needed to get the Gov's attention. I can't tell everyone how proud I have been of the fly fishing community's commitment to this issue. Please keep it coming. A mailed letter is the best way to go but you can also make requests at the Governor's website. Please be advised that his website won't accept attachments. Gary W. Flanagan |

UPDATE November 25th, 2003 As you know GBF has taken the lead on trying to get the California Department of Fish and Game to stop the spread of the New Zealand Mud Snail in Putah Creek. Fish and Game has refused to close Putah [creek] to keep this snail from being carried to other places in our area like the American, Lower Yuba, Lower Sacramento, Feather and other fisheries in California. GBF has hired a government consultant and we plan on attending the Dec 3rd (Wed) Fish and Game Commission Meeting an demanding the Putah [creek] be closed to fishing until the problem can be resolved. We can't afford to have these snails spread. They will destroy a rivers aquatic plants and the fish will die. The Department says they have no money and are short staffed. This is not an excuse to allow our streams to die. This is what we need to convince the Commission to institute the closure and force Fish and Game to kill the snails. Write a letter asking the Commission to close Putah Creek. You may use the attached letters as a template or create your own. We also need as many people as possible to attend the Commission meeting on:
December 3rd (Wed) at 10:00am
State Personnel Board Room Rm. 150
801 Capitol Mall
Sacramento
Please e-mail me a copy of your letter and mail a hard copy to the address listed on my letter or see above. If you plan on attending the meeting, please sign the card provided at the meeting to speak during the public forum. You can go to the GBF website for more information of call me at [916] 223-4240, www.gbflycasters.org Thanks, Gary W. Flanagan |

On October 30, 2003, [Ken W. Davis] found a population of New Zealand Mud Snails (NZMS) in Putah Creek. The CDF&G Bioassessment Lab confirmed the identification as NZMS. The introduction of NZMS into California's popular trout streams is a real problem. They replace the native aquatic invertebrates and offer almost no value to feeding trout. They will not go away! |
