Dry Creek Conservancy Salmon and Steelhead Survey Procedure

Fall 2007

General Guidelines

  • These items will be provided:  measuring tape (sewing tape), surveyors tape for tagging fish, thermometer, GPS unit (if possible), clipboard, 2006 form, and pencil.
  • Observers will be paired with a partner for safety.
  • Don’t walk through private land unless you have permission from the landowner.
  • Walk upstream at the edge of the water or in the stream to view the stream at all times.
  • Avoid walking on riffles and on redds.
  • Don’t walk in high water or fast flows.  Skip areas where creek is unsafe.
  • Please fill out the waiver provided.

Filling out the Survey Sheet

Heading:  List Station Code from list, date, observers, flow level, water temp, and form page #.

Field Condition:

§         Enter time, weather, and water clarity at the beginning and end of the walk.  It isn’t necessary to make these entries for each line.  Time can be entered occasionally, and weather and water clarity should be entered if they change during the walk.

§         Enter lat/long, if available, for redds.  Lat/long for live fish and carcasses are optional.

Live fish:

  • Enter number of fish seen in each group on a separate line in the live fish column.
  • If they are on a redd note that in a separate entry for the redd.  Avoid counting fish twice as they swim upstream.

Redds:

  • Enter each redd or cluster of redds on a separate line in the Redds section.  Note coordinates if possible.
  • Enter number of live fish on or near redd.  There may be no fish on the redd.
  • Estimate redd area
  • Note redd condition using description codes provided for stream feature, dominant material, and sandiness.

Carcasses:

  • Record each carcass on a separate line in the Carcasses section.
  • Record sex of carcass.  Male will be dark colored, often red, and have a pronounced hooked jaw.  Pushing on belly may produce eggs in female and milt in male.
  • Record the length of the fish by measuring from the tip of snout to fork of tail (not end of tail).
  • Indicate if adipose fin is clipped off.  This is the small fin on top of the fish right in front of the tail.  A clipped adipose fin indicates a hatchery fish, though sometimes it will be missing due to decomposition.
  • Record if the fish has been previously tagged.

Comments:  Add any potentially helpful comments about location, condition of fish, etc. for each line.

Tagging carcasses

  • Tag the carcass to avoid counting the same carcass twice in different weeks.
  • Thread a 1 to 2 foot piece of surveyors tape through mouth and gill and tie in a knot.  (Be careful of sharp teeth!)
  • Mark all carcasses even if previously marked.  Leave previous tags on the fish.  Discard carcass in current.
