Comments:

Last year's GBF American River steelhead was earlier by two weeks.  Perhaps this was part of our somewhat unspectacular results in 2005, but hopefully 2006 will be better.  Prior years runs saw some super heavy-weights which demanded an 8 weight minimum fly rod with floating line and lots of backing.

The fly selection varied from glo bugs, egg patterns, large nymphs, or my favorite, the "egg sucking leech".

A minimum of 10 pound test tippet - and lots of split shot - will probably get the job done. Boots, waders, wading staff, and polarized glasses are a big help.  It's again rumored that a very special Steelhead of 3 years ago may make a return appearance to see if our past president is willing to sacrifice yet another rod...Lesson: we never let you forget!

Water flow conditions usually influence the location of this fishout on the American River.

Contact Alex Giannini via email: freshwater_flyfisher@hotmail.com for more information.  Sign-up sheet will be at the January General Meeting.  Mike Powers demonstrates how it’s done in these photos by Kent Ripley:
