UPDATE: Scroll down to see Bill's instructions of June 26
below:
"The new date is July 9th. That is the only
remaining date on my schedule. Those who haven't done so
please send me your $20 check made payable to GBF. If you
have already paid and can't make the new date, let me know
and I will destroy your check. If there are any questions,
please respond by email. Thanks!" Bill C. This clinic is one of GBF’s most popular events. It is always “sold out.” Last year I believe everyone caught fish on nymphs by the end of the day. The purpose of the clinic is to teach nymph fishing skills, with a sprinkling of other skills such as rigging, reading the water, and wading safety. The clinic is held in the morning, followed by self-provided lunch. The afternoon is spent fishing. I, along with the other instructors, will work with each individual to help with problems and hone skills. As usual, we meet early in the morning at the pizza joint in Downieville, and head for the river after assembling there.
We can handle 20 members. We will have a waiting list
in case of cancellations. The fee is $20.00, all of which
goes to GBF. There will be a sign-up sheet at the May meeting. I
will check with those who signed up to make sure that they are
committed to attend, so that those interested will have a chance to
sign up. For details, or to have your name added to the list or the
waiting list, call Bill Carnazzo at (916) 663-2604 (home) or (916)
295-9353 (cell); or send an email:

2005 UPDATE:
Here's the info for the short line nymphing clinic; call
or send me an email if you have any questions.
We will meet at 7:30am at the little pizza restaurant
that is on the right as you enter Downieville. It is next to a
Union 76 gas station. You can't miss it. There is a good coffee
shop next door. The parking lot will likely be full due to the
fact that Downieville has become a mountain biking mecca, so you
may want to get there a bit earlier. Car pooling is a good idea,
especially since there is limited parking at the location along
the river where we will be having the clinic.
Bring your #4, 5, or 6 rod with a floating line and a good
(preferably new) 7.5' 3x leader. Waders are a matter of choice,
but it would be a good idea to bring them along since the water
may still be cold. A non-stretch wading belt is also a good
idea. Do have sturdy wading shoes with (at least) felt bottoms.
The best choice is felt bottoms with carbide spikes.
A wading staff is essential--don't leave
home without it.
Be sure to have
tippet spools in at least 3x, 4x, and 5x sizes. Also, you will
need split shot in the "BB" size--either lead or a substitute.
For clothing, wear earth tones--no
whites, reds, or other bright colored shirts or hats. For the
evening, a long sleeved shirt is a good idea because of the
mosquitoes and black flies. Bring bug repellent, water, food for
lunch and snacks, a hat, and polarized sun glasses.
Flies: Parachute Adams, Light
Cahill, Elk Hair Caddis, all in #14; Stimulators, #10; Red
Copper John, Prince Nymph, Hare's Ear, Bird's Nest, all in #14;
Poxyback Golden Stone, #8; Bill's Stick Caddis in brown or grey
color, #8. These will get you by; if you have small emerger
patterns I would bring them along as there can be a good late
morning or afternoon hatch, depending on weather conditions.
Also bring some silicone fly dressing and dry fly powder.
The agenda is as follows:
8:00AM (+/-) to 10:00AM -
off-river instruction on rigging and tactics
10:00AM to Noon - on-river clinic
Noon to 1:00PM or so - Lunch
1:00PM to whenever - fish the
river
For the afternoon, we will break
up into groups and tackle different sections of the river. I
have a number of good assistants who will get you into fish - no
guarantees, but in the past few years everyone has caught fish
after learning the short line technique that will be taught in
this clinic.
Carpe pisces...see ya on the
creek. |
