The river is producing some very nice steelies, but the weather will be cold and maybe damp so be prepared.  If we get a lot of rain and the river is blown out, we will probably cancel the trip, so stay tuned.  Mike is maintaining an email list of those who want to go, and will keep you posted.  We will be staying at the Del Loma RV Park, which is 73 miles west of Redding.  In good weather it takes about 4.5 hours from Sacramento to get there; allow more time if there is bad weather.

There are five cabins. Three of them can sleep 3, and go for $55 per night for two plus $5 for the extra person. The other two can sleep 4 at $75 per night for two and $5 for each extra person. The larger cabins have stoves and all cabins have microwave ovens, picnic tables, and BBQ kettles. Mike has put a hold on all cabins until he can get a head count. If you bring your own RV, the charge is $22 (full hook ups).

If you prefer a tent, the cost is $2.00 per night, with one tent allowed per cabin. You will need to bring all of your own food, as there are no restaurants in the near vicinity.

For equipment, a 7 or 8 rod will do. Bring a floating line set up for indicator fishing. You can also swing flies, in which case you may wish to have an intermediate line and also a fast-sinking sink tip line. Flies for the Trinity vary, but egg patterns (small) can be counted on.

If you want up to date information, call the Fly Shop in Redding: (530) 222-3555.  Mike will send the group an email on Dec. 8th to confirm everything.

  1. Trinity River, Douglas City: Steelhead fishing has been excellent, especially for fly fishermen using egg patterns. And, although most anglers are trying for steelhead, fall-run kings are still available because the salmon quota had not been reached. Copper Johns and egg patterns under indicators produced steelhead to 10 1/2 pounds from Junction City to Lewiston.

12/14/2004: Message Board from Mike Howes

Six and a half members (Denny was there on Sunday) braved the weather forecast and storm residue.   The weather turned out to be very nice and the river was running high but fishable.  At Del Loma the river was too high so we traveled back toward Lewiston to fish.   Four of us pontooned on two stretches of the river, it was great.  We also fished the Lewiston cemetery section of the river.  The fishing, the catching part, wasn't spectacular but fish were caught.  The totals were 4 steelhead, 2 German browns and several trout.  Life is good
