GBF is headed over the Sierras Thursday - Sunday, July 14 - 17 to beautiful Virginia Lakes. Located off Highway 395 just south of the town of Bridgeport. These three small natural lakes are true Sierra Gems! Several high granite peaks tower over these pristine lakes while soaking their toes in the silent depths of these natural water features./smaller>/fontfamily> The Virginia Lakes are accessible by vehicle at an altitude of 9600 feet ( so bring plenty of warm clothes) but if you want a treat, take a short hike up the trail to one of the many walk-in lakes that contain Golden Trout.. The lakes are generously stocked with very active fish in the 12-14 inch range but we can also expect to catch holdover rainbows, the occasional Alpers to 6 pounds, as well as native browns and brooks. It is a great place for both the beginner and experienced float tuber and a wonderful place for families. Within a short drive are also many moving water experiences like the Walker (East and West), Green Creek. Robinson Creek and Virginia Creek./smaller>/fontfamily> The area boasts a nice campground at Trumbull Lake. There is a size limit of 26 feet for RV's, but there is a lot of unimproved camping a short distance down the road along the creek. There is a small store with a lunch counter that has showers for a nominal fee at Little Virginia Lake. I will be reserving some campsites for us at Trumbull. A five weight rod with an intermediate or type II sink is usually the ticket, but there is also generally some dry fly action early and late. Buggers and Matukas (cinnamon, brown, green or black) generally work well along with several small nymphs and even San Juan Worms worked last year. If you are looking for a beautiful spot with great fishing for a July outing, please join us! More information will be available at the June meeting./smaller>/fontfamily> Sandy reports on last year's Kaul family fish tally: "Michael. . .definitely wins for number of fish caught in the year. . . sheer tenacity and number of days of fishing. However, I out-fished him on our last trip together to Davis!" 'Atta girl! That's showin' him! If you plan on going, call Michael Kaul, (530) 677-8022 so we can get an adequate number of sites for camping. See map below... |
