Upper Sac Fishout Report
by Joe Aichroth
If you
weren't there, you missed a good one! Although the
weather threatened with showers on Thursday, it turned
out to be a good weekend. The water conditions were
excellent with good flow and clarity.
Bill
Carnazzo gave his short line nymphing clinic on Friday
morning to 7 enthusiastic fly fishers and it was catch
and release from then on. Laura Ford caught her first
fish on a fly; what a thrill! Gil Machado caught a fish
he estimated to be 5 pounds. There were other large
fish in the river due to the state stocking some brood
fish. As it turns out everyone seems to have caught fish
every day. Our group dinners were fun affairs with lots
of fish stories being told. Mark this outing on your
calendar for next year.
One of the premier outings of the GBF. For those early
arrivals, we are planning to have Thursday dinner at the
Pizza Factory in downtown Dunsmuir, at 8:30 PM. For
those who wish to, dinner on Friday at Casa Ramos in Mt.
Shasta City at 8:30 PM and dinner on Saturday at Mike
and Tony’s in Mt. Shasta City also at 8:30 PM. Take
exit #737 from I-5 and continue north, Casa Ramos is on
the right at number 1136 and Mike and Tony’s is at
number 501 on the left. These group dinners have been a
lot of fun and an opportunity to share the day’s
experience.
There are several convenient motels in the area; Cave
Springs Motel (530) 235-2721 has rooms, cabins and room
for RV’s; the Acorn Motel is north a short distance
(530) 235-4805. Cedar Lodge is across the street.
Be prepared for rain and/or chilly weather, winter comes
early in northern Calif. Also, bring lunch and
beverage; there may be no food outlets where you’re
fishing.
We will make an effort to pair newer fishers with
experienced Upper Sac fishers at the Friday morning
meeting.
Bill Carnazzo and, if he is available, Ron Rabun, are
planning to give their well known and received Short
Line Clinic. There will be no charge for this clinic,
which will be held on Friday, October 12th,
from 10:00 AM to noon. After that, Bill (and Ron, if he
can make it) will provide help on the river to any
member who requests it (no charge). The clinic is open
to all attendees, and there is no limit on the number
who can participate. See the September Leader for
Bill’s Fall Phase Stick Caddis pattern which no one
should be without. |
