Update: (Nov. 4, 2009)
We need more boats! Give Denny a call if you are a GBF member
boater and can come with us and carry an extra flyfisher. So far he has
8 boats and more flyfishers signed up than there is room.
Have you ever
done anything really stupid? I seem to be doing it a lot lately. The
telephone number I gave all of you for tomorrow’s trip is actually my
wife’s cell phone number. My cell number is 916-276-5866. Try not to
call Rosemary’s number tomorrow morning at 4:30 lest I pay the price.
On the other hand, she’s like the riderless horse in the old
westerns…she always comes home.

Annual GBF Delta Fishout - 2007
Now for a couple
special rules / observations for this fishout:
1. THE
BOAT OWNER IS THE CAPTAIN OF THE BOAT…WHAT HE SAYS GOES!
2. SAFETY
FIRST…EACH PERSON ON THE BOAT MUST HAVE HIS/HER OWN Personal
Flotation Device.
3. MAKE
SURE YOUR FISHING LICENSE HAS A DELTA BAY STAMP.
4. BRING
A CELL PHONE
5. EACH
NON-BOATER SHOULD COORDINATE SHARING OF EXPENSES WITH THE
BOATER BEFORE THE FISHOUT.
6. MAKE
SURE YOU HAVE A DELTA MAP (“FISH-N-MAP"…is best; get it at
Fly shops, Sportsmen's, online)
7. MY
CELL PHONE NUMBER IS 916-276-5011.
8. THE
LAUNCH FEE AT PARADISE POINT IS $16.00. BRING EXACT CHANGE.
Time / Tides:
Let’s plan on meeting
at 6:00 a.m.
The best fishing is usually when the water is moving, usually better
at the incoming high tide, which on November 11th is at
2:00 p.m. There’s an old adage, however, that says the best time to
fish is whenever you can. There’s an even older adage that says
never, never miss the “magic hour” before sunrise. It’s during that
hour that everything is still…no wind…wildlife is the only sound you
hear other than the occasional splash of a fish or the call of a
bird. Working a tule line or rip-rap bank is truly magical during
that time. We will be in good fishing water within 2-3 minutes of
leaving the ramp. Sunrise is at 6:43 that morning so if you can get
there earlier than that feel free to launch and fish right out from
the ramp.
Please get back to me with any questions, comments, etc. ~ Denny

THIRD ANNUAL VETERAN’S DAY DELTA FISHOUT
Wednesday, November 11th,
2009
The time is coming
up for our Third Annual Veteran’s Day Delta fishout. Veteran’s Day
is Wednesday, November 11th. There will be
a sign-up sheet at the September meeting and I’ll want to know how
many boats are going to be available and how many non-boaters want
to attend. Last year we had about 15 boats and we were able to
accommodate about 35 anglers. I expect we’ll do about the same this
year.
For those of you
who haven’t attended this fishout in the past you’re missing the
boat (little play on words there). This fishout is an absolute
blast. It is timed to coincide with the annual striper run so
stripers, black bass and smallies will all be on the agenda. With
any kind of luck, fishing will be fantastic.
I plan on putting
in at Paradise Point Marina. Paradise is located at the end of
Disappointment Slough and Bishop Cut. Paradise is especially good
because you have much safer water to fish from a kayak or a pontoon
boat.
For those of you with boats, fill ‘em with gas
and make sure they can start. We’ll have some special rules re the
Delta for this trip and I’ll make all that public later. What I’d
like to do ASAP is get a preliminary headcount. Please email me
(dennywelch@jps.net)
and let me know if you’re interested in the
trip and whether you have a boat. If there are any questions, give
me a call at (530) 889-8562 or (916) 786-2070. As time goes on I’ll
be posting email blasts giving further information re the trip.
If anyone is
interested in co-hosting this trip, please contact me. Thanks.
The planning for this fishout is still
a work in progress. A lot of what happens depends on the number of
boats we have and the number of non-boaters that want to attend the
fishout. I’ve been fishing out of Paradise Point a lot lately and I
feel it would be safe for kayaks and larger pontoon boats.
Depending on the response, we can schedule a couple pre-fishout
meetings. For those of you who have heard of the Delta, but haven’t
fished it yet, this is a perfect opportunity to do so. It is a
total, absolute blast. There will be more to follow as we get
closer to November. For now, take a look at the write up I did for
last year’s event (see link above).
