FISHOUT CALENDAR 2008 Granite Bay Flycasters Outing Committee Updated 5/3/2008; new outings, dates, and changes in red 2008-09 Calif. Sport Fishing Regs. (valid thru 2/28/2009) All dates are tentative, and rescheduling may have to occur due to weather and high flows, which are always a concern, especially for outings in northerly areas of the state. Each fishout leader will USUALLY email status. CALL them IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS !
(Click this link to see fishouts from prior years)
This is where you can locate past, present and future outings that Granite Bay Flycasters provides to its Membership. You can also find these fishouts listed on our annual calendar pages. These Club Fishouts are designed to give flyfishers the best opportunity to catch fish. From selecting the right location and time, to helping those members new to the sport, we try to make these trips fun, exciting and successful. Our Club has many accomplished anglers who are willing to share their skills with others and you are only limited by willingness to become involved. We are also fortunate to have some of the best fisheries in the nation. Whether you are interested in Stripers, Shad, Salmon, Steelhead, Bass, Pan Fish, or Trout, our region has opportunities available on a year-round basis.
Fishout details will be published in The Leader and on the Web page links below by the beginning of the month of the fishout. Since weather/water conditions and other factors can affect fishout arrangements, you should always be in contact with the Fishout Leader before attending an event. Club Fishouts are limited to participation by active club members only...if you haven't joined GBF yet, be sure to contact us (here) for an application so we can get you enrolled.
We will also have fill-in, spur of the moment outings in between the regular scheduled Club Fishouts that will be announced via the GBF Message Board or an Email message blast. We're looking forward to a fun and productive year.

Warm Water Corner by Pete Peterson
It is getting that time of the year when a lot of fishermen put up their gear for the winter. It is also the time of the year that is the best for stripers, bass and lake trout.
The larger stripers will have moved up the Mokelumne River and 10-20 lb. fish will be quite common. As mentioned in a previous article, this is a great time for O’Neill Forebay which is very easy to float-tube. Minimum weight rod should be an 8 wt.
The fish will be gorging themselves, so a large fly will work best. This is the time of year that I never use anything smaller than a 3/0 and usually 4 or 5/0. For those that want to fish the Delta, but do not have a boat, there are boat rentals all along the Franks Tract area. There are also numerous guides that will take you out (for a price).
The guides I personally know that are excellent are: Dan Blanton (408) 778-0602 Mike Costello (925) 634-1280 Doug Lovell and Leo Siren (510) 526-1937 Kevin Doran – great largemouth guide but I don’t know if he does Stripers
This is also the time of year that the lakes turn over. The warmer water and the colder water trade places. This is the time that bass know winter is coming and it is time to store up extra weight. The very best lake this time of year is Berryessa. It can be fished by boat or tube. Crayfish imitations work great with 20-30 smallmouth a day quite common.
Amador Lake raises their own breed of trout. The fish are released as large as 12 lbs. The lake is currently down 35 feet, but they are going to plant as per their original schedule. Fly fishermen outdo the hardware guys on this lake. Since all the fish are planters, it is a good time to take home a few. Contact Amador at (209) 274-4739 for planting info and if their grill is open. Nothing seems to ever work better than an olive wooly bugger.
Don’t put your gear away – go fishing.

Outing Committee Report Bill Carnazzo April 1, 2008
Time to begin planning fishouts and other events for the rest of 2008: It's time to plan our outings, classes, and clinics schedule for the second half of 2008. We've had a great time with our outings during the last year (July, '07 to present), but we need to keep up the momentum. We've already had offers from Chuck Honeycutt to lead a Heenan Lake fishout later this summer; Ron Hayashi and Sturmer White to do an advanced knot clinic; Ron Hayashi and John Peterson to do an introductory spey clinic; and Jim Holmes and Gene Goss to do a class on stillwater flyfishing. We need input from members on suggested outings for this upcoming period, as well as volunteers willing to lead the outings. The response for the last year has been terrific. We also want suggestions for classes and clinics, which are an important part of our education mission. We are, first and foremost, a fishing club--so we need to do outings, and we need to pass along our skills to members wanting to improve theirs. Here's what we'd like: 1. Suggestions as to fishout venues. 2. Volunteers to lead outings. 3. Suggestions as to classes and clinics that would be helpful, in addition to those mentioned above. You can send your suggestions to Bill Carnazzo, whose contact information is set out below. From there the outing committee, consisting of Bill, Denny, and Mike Susslin, will take over and come up with specifics and a schedule. Thanks! Bill Carnazzo (530) 367-5209 |

To those who took the time to fill out a fishout survey, we appreciate your effort in helping us construct a fishout schedule for this year based on your input. We presented the survey results at the July meeting in PowerPoint format after selecting the 20 locations that received the highest number of votes.
Based on the survey results, the fishout schedule for this year is set out below in order by date. While all dates are tentative, especially the ones that are farthest out in time, you can use this schedule to make your plans.
In addition to the scheduled outings, there will be “impromptu” outings at some of the other locations listed in the survey itself, and at some of the locations that were written into the survey form by those who responded. For these, we will use the message board and “email blasts” to notify members in advance.
Feel free to contact the outing committee members if you have any questions. Because the schedule is somewhat tentative, please feel free to provide input. Our names and contact information is shown above at the top of this webpage. How to sign up for a fishout: Once an article appears in the Leader and on the Website, it will inform you when and where you can sign up. Usually, a sign-up sheet will be offered at the next Club meeting. Some Fishouts have a limit on the number of participants. This is to ensure that participants have a quality experience and the event is not over crowded. Also, some private access locations only allow a finite amount of anglers at one time. On limited fishouts we do not allow pre-sign up. This is so all members have a fair chance to participate. Please, do not call the Fishout Leader for pre-sign ups on limited fishouts. Once you receive notification in the Leader and Website for unlimited member fishouts, you can sign up at anytime by contacting the Fishout Leader. You may access a complete copy of GBF's Fishout and Clinic Guidelines at this link. |

Fishout Leaders needed...Click this link for GBF's "Guideline for Fishouts and Clinics" Would you like to lead a GBF Fishout? Choose one of your favorite spots (or one you don't mind sharing with others) and lead your fellow GBF'ers there for a day (or longer) of fishing, fun, and fellowship. Even if you have never organized such an outing, GBF will make it easy (and fun) for you. It doesn't need to be a blue ribbon stream. A good farm pond or a productive stretch of a local stream or lake will do. Or consider limiting the participation to only a few people if the area you like won't support much pressure. Click this link for “How to lead a GBF Fishout” and this link for a blank fishout template form you can return to the Fishmaster, who will use it to help you plan your fishout and article for the Leader, which is due by the 15th of the preceding month.
