Jay Murakoshi has been leading fly
fishing specialty programs since 1973. His fly tying demonstrations and
instruction are showcased at North American Expositions, Pro Shops, and
Conclaves. He is a founding member of the “Pacific Pro Surf
Association.” Over several years, he has taught a fly-fishing course at
the local Junior College. In fact, one of his past students has gone on to
become a top reel manufacturer (that's Jon
Bauer of Bauer Fly Reels)!
Jay’s specialty is salt-water fly-fishing, especially in the waters of
Baja... the Sea of Cortez. He loves to target roosterfish, dorado, and
yellowfin tuna. Jay and partner Ken Hanley also hold fly fishing schools
in Baja for those wanting an introduction to the 'saltwater world' of
fly-fishing. Their classes are in such high demand that they are often booked
a year in advance! Jay and Ken have also put on a yearly
fly-fishing tournament - the purpose of which is to raise money for an
orphanage in La
Paz.
Jay’s commercial tying skills (both design and production) are highly
sought after by top guns in the business… including Trey Combs, Lefty
Kreh, and Ed Rice among others. He started tying commercially back in 1973. His
first commercial account was Orvis. And like the saying goes “the rest
is history”. He is currently experimenting and creating flies with llama
hair. He has tied numerous baitfish patterns and some creative squid
patterns using tubes. He has also designed a number of flies for the surf
using llama hair. His custom designs are available directly through his
website (www.fliesunlimited.com).
With decades of field experience, Jay has earned a Pro Staff position
with numerous companies, including G. Loomis, Airflo Lines, Bauer Reels,
Spirit River, and Daiichi.
FLY FISHING BAJA "THE SEA OF CORTEZ" – Jay Murakoshi
This program will cover three different areas of the Baja peninsula. I
have been fishing these waters for a few years now and have been doing "Inshore fly fishing clinics"
there for the past 4 years. Loreto, which is
situated in the northern portion of the Sea of Cortez, is one of the
favorite fly-fishing locations for giant dorado during the summer
months. By venturing out into the big blue waters of the Sea of Cortez,
you can run into giant bull dorado that will make your reel scream and
put you rod to the maximum test!
The next location I will cover is the La Paz/Las Arenas area. I
believe, without a doubt, that this is the hottest fly-fishing area in
the Sea of Cortez. You have a wide range of species to fish for... from
roosters, jacks, and dorado, to yellowfin tuna, skipjack, and a variety of
rockfish. Also within the area are wahoo and sailfish. The island of
Cerralvo and the white sand beaches of Punta Arena de la Ventana offer fly fishermen some of the
most exciting surf fishing available.
The last location I will cover in this presentation is the area called the "East Cape".
I will take you to the area of Punta Colorada.
This is considered the home of the "world record roosterfish".
The area of Punta Colorada caters to big game fisherman who are in
search of marlin and sailfish. But the fly fishermen can also take
that challenge. For those who aren’t into those large species, there is
a lot of beach fishing to explore with jacks, ladyfish, and roosters
busting bait right on the beach. There are also ATV rentals available to
explore some 40 miles of beach if that’s to your liking.
In this program, I will also cover everything you will need to know
to go traveling abroad. Also covered in the program will be suggestions
on what types of rods, reels, lines, leaders, and flies you will need to
have. This program will get your adrenaline flowing and your arms
aching.
