October 2003 Speaker

Jeff Putnam

Jeff has been an avid fly fisherman for over twenty years.  He began tying flies commercially at the age of 13 and has appeared as a Master Fly Tier at the popular International Sportsman’s Exposition (where he also performs fly casting demonstrations).  Jeff has worked as a guide for lodges in Montana and Colorado - and independently in Northern California.  After guiding, Jeff went on the road as a sales rep for Dan Bailey’s and other fly fishing equipment manufacturers.  He has also worked for several Northern California fly shops, and currently works at Kiene’s Fly Shop in Sacramento.

Jeff now runs his own fly fishing schools and travel business (out of his office at Kiene's) and serves as a Pro Staff member for Scott Fly Rods, Patagonia, and Waterworks Fly Reels.  He has fished exotic locations such as Belize, Christmas Island, Alaska, and Canada.  Jeff’s favorite fishing experiences include trout on spring creeks, tarpon on the flats, and spey fishing for steelhead.

Jeff is one of the West's premier fly casting instructors and is a Certified Casting Instructor with the Federation of Fly Fishers.  His
presentation at the October meeting will focus on fly casting - from basic fundamentals to specific, advanced techniques.  He'll cover the following topics: equipment (rods and lines), basic casting mechanics, casting efficiency, single and double hauling, distance and windy conditions casting, and resolving common casting problems - and will save part of the lecture for questions and answers.
